Philippians 3:7-14 (KJV)
(* indicates my additions offered for explanation)
7 But what things were *gain (*= profitable) to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things (*previous context - worldly goals) but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, (* the things of the world that are precious to us) and do count them but *dung (*= shit), that I may *win (* the opposite would be to lose) Christ,
9 And be found in *him, (* Christ) not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, (* Old Testament) but that which is through the faith of Christ, (*New Testament) the righteousness which is of God by *faith: (*= believing)
10 That (* purpose) I may *know (*= by experience) him, (*Christ) and the power of his resurrection, (* the potential power to overcome the world) and the fellowship of his sufferings, (* by living in this world) being made conformable unto his death; (* we are in the flesh as he was)

11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. (* This isn't referring to the actual event but the enlightenment that will come with such an awakening.) (* Side note: Those born again have already experienced a resurrection from among the dead.)

12 Not as though I had already *attained, (*= arrived) either were already perfect: (* Complete enlightenment isn't available yet) but I *follow (*= pursue in order to find) after, if that I may *apprehend (*= seize upon) that for which also I am *apprehended (*= seized upon) of Christ Jesus.
13 *Brethren, (* Philippians is addressed to the spiritually mature. Disciples) I count not myself to have apprehended: (* I know I don't know it all) but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, (* natural desires) and reaching forth unto those things which are before, (* spiritual knowledge)
14 I press toward the mark for the *prize (* Context. Enlightenment) of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (* the New Testament).

Figures Of Speech: Idiom
I'd guess every language that advanced has used idioms. It's a peculiar usage of words that are not to be taken literally but the meaning known by those native to that language. It's important to know and recognize how the words of the two languages used in the Bible (Hebrew and Greek) were used by those using them at the time they were written. Much truth is losted and twisted because of ignorance of this.
Websters 1913 Dictionary
Id´i`om Pronunciation: ĭd´ĭ`ŭm
n. 1. The syntactical or structural form peculiar to any language; the genius or cast of a language.
Idiom may be employed loosely and figuratively as a synonym of language or dialect, but in its proper sense it signifies the totality of the general rules of construction which characterize the syntax of a particular language and distinguish it from other tongues. - G. P. Marsh.
By idiom is meant the use of words which is peculiar to a particular language.
2. An expression conforming or appropriate to the peculiar structural form of a language.
Some that with care true eloquence shall teach,
And to just idioms fix our doubtful speech. - Prior.
3. A combination of words having a meaning peculiar to itself and not predictable as a combination of the meanings of the individual words, but sanctioned by usage; as, an idiomatic expression; less commonly, a single word used in a peculiar sense.
Examples we use today would be...
"Turn the page" To imply moving on.
"Croaked" to imply died.
"Salty" to imply experienced.
